Qatar’s weightlifter Faris Ibrahim has made history presenting Qatar with the first gold medal in the history of its participation in the Olympics after he won the gold medal in the 96kg weightlifting competition for men at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, the official news agency QNA reported.

The 23-year-old prevailed in the 96-kg category in setting an Olympic record with a total of 402 kilograms in total.

The two-time world junior champion and 2019 world silver medallist was considered one of the medal favourites.

Qatar first won an Olympic medal in Barcelona in 1992 with track and field athlete Mohamed Suleiman winning bronze in the 1,500 metres.

Fares Ibrahim Saed Hassouna El-Bakh, commonly known as Meso Hassouna, is of Egyptian descent. He was born on 4th June 1998 in Egypt.
